Abstract
The purpose of the study is to investigate the ability of the Korean public of correctly recognizing depressive symptoms and their beliefs on diverse methods employed to resolve the symptoms; and to establish a foundation from which to draw strategies for prevention and early detection of depression. A household survey was conducted on 1,738 adults of age between 18 and 75 who are residing in Seoul metropolitan area. The study results showed that of the respondents 32.9% correctly identified the symptoms presented in the vingnette to be of depression; others have conceptualized the symptoms to be of such categories as stress, individual/familial problems, and mental problems. To questions asking helpfulness of various people/methods/medications for such symptoms, they rated highly family, friends, counselors, and psychiatrists; they preferred methods other than conventional mental health approaches except for counseling; of the medications listed, they believed antidepressants and nutrients to be the most helpful. Significant differences in beliefs were also found in several of these people/methods between males and females, and among age groups. The authors discussed these results in comparison with those of similar studies from other countries, and suggested policy and practice implications for a nationwide intervention of depression.
